National Cancer Screening Register

For pathology laboratories: Supporting lung cancer screening program participants

National Lung Cancer Screening Program Logo

The National Cancer Screening Register (NCSR) supports the operation of the lung cancer screening program by facilitating timely diagnosis and acting as a safety net by prompting participants to take the next steps on their screening journey.

It also maintains a national database of low-dose computed tomography (low-dose CT)  results (excluding CT scan images).

For pathology laboratories

The National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP) leverages existing infrastructure used by the bowel and cervical  programs, meaning there are minimal changes required for currently integrated laboratories to submit lung histology to the NCSR.

The NCSR accepts the histopathology reports via HL7 using the existing channel used by the laboratory and reporting pathologist, with the addition of a lung program code. An NCSR pathology integration guide has been produced and is available upon request.

Pathology data is an important part of monitoring and evaluating the NLCSP’s effectiveness by facilitating adherence to evidence-based quality and safety standards, and supporting continuous improvement.
