For radiology providers: Supporting lung cancer screening program participants

The National Cancer Screening Register (NCSR) supports the operation of the lung cancer screening program by facilitating timely diagnosis and acting as a safety net by prompting participants to take the next steps on their screening journey.
It also maintains a national database of low-dose computed tomography (low-dose CT) results (excluding CT scan images).
The role of radiology providers
Radiology providers perform low-dose CT scans for participants referred for lung cancer screening. Radiology providers can use two NLCSP-specific Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) items for low-dose CT scans and follow structured reporting guidelines for consistent and effective lung cancer screening.
Radiologists are mandated to send a copy of final screening reports to the NCSR via HL7 or the Healthcare Provider Portal. An NCSR radiology integration guide has been produced and is available on request.
For information about how to submit a radiology report, please click on the Quick start guide: Getting your radiology practice ready to report to the NCSR tile below.
If you would like to integrate with the NCSR, require additional information, or have any questions, please call the contact centre on 1800 627 701 or submit an online enquiry form.

Manual transition period
A six-month transition period (1 July to 31 December 2025) is in place to allow practices not yet integrated to send reports manually (i.e. fax or post) to the NCSR.
Any radiology reports sent manually will need to include participant demographic details, and all mandatory questions and answers required in the radiology dataset.
For information on how to complete the manual form, please see the Quick start guide below.
